After conducting trials there in late summer season and early fall, she commenced shakedown coaching in November. She returned to Long Beach on 22 January 1971 and remained there until 2 February when she bought underway for Pearl Harbor. The ASW suite of Truxtun originally included the un-manned Dash, however in 1971 the hangar was upgraded to LAMPS Mk. During the primary week in October, a Board of Inspection and Survey inspected Truxtun; and, on 8 October, she started a restricted availability throughout which she was modified to utilize the light Airborne Multi-objective System (LAMPS).
